Schlage Deadbolt Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
Schlage deadbolt installation in Atlanta typically runs $180-$340 for a standard single-cylinder replacement, including the lockset, labor, and rekey to match your existing key. We stock Schlage B60N, B62N, and B660P series on every truck, and most residential jobs are completed same-day. The price you hear on the phone is the price on the invoice - Haven Standard Clause 1, in effect since 2002.
Most Atlanta homeowners discover their deadbolt is failing when the thumb turn grinds, the key sticks in humid weather, or the bolt no longer throws fully into the strike plate. In older Inman Park and Virginia-Highland homes, we regularly find original builder-grade deadbolts that have corroded internally after years of summer humidity cycling through the door frame.
Which Schlage Models This Applies To
Schlage organizes its deadbolts by grade and application. The B60N is the Grade 2 residential single-cylinder - the most common replacement we see in Atlanta’s 2015-2025 construction. The B62N adds the flip guard for thumb turn protection. The B660P is Grade 1 commercial, with a 1-inch throw and hardened steel bolt, specified for many Midtown office suites and multi-family common areas.
Identification is straightforward: the model number is stamped on the edge of the door, on the latch faceplate, or inside the thumb turn housing. Schlage uses a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset - the distance from the door edge to the center of the cylinder. Most Atlanta homes built after 2000 use 2-3/8 inch; pre-1990s stock often needs 2-3/4 inch. We carry both backsets and the conversion latches.
We install OEM Schlage and select aftermarket equivalents that meet the same ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 or Grade 1 specification. For keyed-alike systems or SmartKey compatibility needs, we match the existing keyway - Schlage uses the SC1 (5-pin) or SC4 (6-pin) keyway. Mixing keyways means your old keys won’t work. We verify this on the phone before dispatch.
Novak Lock & Security Atlanta is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Schlage, though we are factory-authorized to install and service their full product line.
Signs Your Schlage Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

- Key requires jiggling or repeated attempts. The pin chambers inside the cylinder have worn unevenly, or the driver pins have flattened from use. In Atlanta’s climate, humidity also causes minor corrosion that accelerates this wear. We replace the cylinder or the complete deadbolt depending on the grade of the existing hardware.
- Thumb turn rotates but bolt does not extend. The tailpiece connecting thumb turn to bolt mechanism has sheared or the bolt housing has cracked. This is common on Grade 3 builder-grade deadbolts after 5-8 years of use. We find this frequently in Decatur and East Atlanta homes with original hardware.
- Bolt sticks or grinds in the strike plate. Door frame settlement, common in Atlanta’s clay-heavy soils, shifts the strike plate out of alignment. The bolt face wears down from repeated friction. We realign the strike and replace the bolt if the face is scored.
- Loose cylinder spins in the door. The mounting screws have stripped the door material, or the cylinder collar has cracked. This creates a security gap - the cylinder can be pulled or manipulated. We install a reinforced collar and longer screws into the door structure.
- Key breaks off in the cylinder. Usually indicates a seized pin or a key that was already stressed. Extracting the broken key without damaging the cylinder requires the right extractor tools. We carry these and can rekey on site if the cylinder is salvageable.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Schlage B60N Grade 2 single-cylinder, installed | $180-$240 |
| Schlage B62N with flip guard, installed | $220-$290 |
| Schlage B660P Grade 1 commercial, installed | $280-$340 |
| Rekey to match existing key | $15-$25 per cylinder |
| Strike plate realignment (if needed) | $0-$35 |
What drives the range: door thickness (standard 1-3/8 inch vs. solid core 2-inch), backset conversion needs, and whether the existing bore is clean or needs reaming. Commercial Grade 1 hardware requires additional door prep - the face bore must be 2-1/8 inch and the edge bore 1 inch.
Every installation includes: the deadbolt, labor, written warranty, and documented photo record left with you at completion. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies - if it’s not done right, we make it right. We also stock Kwikset and Medeco if your security needs or keying requirements differ from what Schlage offers.
DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check: verify the model number on the faceplate, confirm your backset measurement with a tape measure, and test whether the issue is the lock or the door alignment by operating the bolt with the door open. If the bolt throws smoothly without the door closed, your strike plate is the problem, not the deadbolt.
Where DIY goes wrong: drilling a new bore without a door jig creates visible splintering, especially on fiberglass or steel doors common in newer Atlanta subdivisions. Improper cylinder orientation - Schlage cylinders are handed left or right - results in a thumb turn that rotates backward. And rekeying requires pinning kits most homeowners don’t own.

FAQs
A Grade 2 Schlage B60N typically lasts 10-15 years in residential use, but Atlanta’s humidity and temperature swings shorten that to 7-12 years for exterior doors without covered entryways. Grade 1 commercial hardware lasts longer due to thicker bolt and housing materials. Call (470) 944-6813 and we’ll assess what you have installed now.
Sometimes. A sticky cylinder can often be cleaned and re-pinned. A sheared tailpiece or cracked housing requires full replacement - the part is internal and not sold separately by Schlage. We carry complete units so you’re not waiting on a parts order. Call (470) 944-6813 for a free estimate.
Most residential Schlage deadbolt replacements take 30-45 minutes, including removal, door prep if needed, installation, and rekey. Commercial Grade 1 jobs or doors requiring strike relocation run 60-90 minutes. We quote the time along with the price - both are firm. Call (470) 944-6813 to schedule.
Yes. We carry B60N, B62N, and B660P series in satin nickel and aged bronze, the two finishes most common in Atlanta homes. Less common finishes - matte black, bright brass - we can source same-day from our supplier on Piedmont Road. Call (470) 944-6813 to confirm availability for your specific model.
