Mul-T-Lock manufactures several distinct cylinder platforms, and each requires specific pinning tools and key blanks that are not cross-compatible.

The Classic series, still common in Atlanta homes built between 2005 and 2015, uses a dimple key with a horizontal keyway and 5 pin stacks. The Interactive+ adds a floating pin and telescopic driver pins for pick resistance. The MT5+ introduces the alpha spring mechanism in the key tip, creating a third locking dimension. The Integrator line, more recent and less common in residential Atlanta, uses a different key blank altogether.

To identify your model: examine the key bow (the head you grip). Classic keys show “MUL-T-LOCK” stamped with no plus symbol. Interactive+ keys carry a plus sign inside a circle. MT5+ keys display “MT5+” and have a small cutout near the tip for the alpha spring. The cylinder face itself may also show these markings.

Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• Key insertion requires force or wiggling. The dimple cuts along the key are not aligning with the pin stacks smoothly. In Atlanta’s climate, this often starts in July or August when indoor humidity exceeds 60% and microscopic corrosion builds on brass pins.
• The key turns but the bolt does not retract. The cam at the rear of the cylinder has worn or the tailpiece connection has loosened. This is mechanical failure, not a pinning issue, but it surfaces during rekeying when we remove the cylinder and find the cam pitted.
• Different keys operate the same lock. A previous rekey was done with incorrect pin lengths, or a master key system was poorly designed with too many change keys. • The key works in one direction only. The cylinder was installed without proper timing, or the plug has shifted axially. Mul-T-Lock cylinders are particularly sensitive to plug-end play because of their telescopic pin design.
• You have lost all working keys. Without a control key or a working key to decode the existing bitting, we must impression the lock or disassemble the cylinder to determine pin heights. This adds 20-40 minutes to the job and requires specialized Mul-T-Lock dimple impressioning tools.

What goes wrong with DIY Mul-T-Lock rekeying: the telescopic pins in Interactive+ and MT5+ cylinders require a follower tool sized precisely to the plug diameter. A standard Schlage follower is 0.495 inches; Mul-T-Lock Classic needs 0.512 inches, and MT5+ uses a stepped plug that demands a two-diameter follower. Without the correct tool, the upper pins and springs launch into the cylinder body. Retrieving them requires full disassembly, and the springs are easily damaged. The alpha spring in MT5+ keys is particularly easy to deform during reassembly.
