Medeco Master Key Systems: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide

Medeco master key systems in Atlanta typically run $340-$780 per cylinder for replacement and rekeying into an existing hierarchy, with most jobs scheduled and completed same-day when parts are in stock. Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco’s master key architecture spans three distinct product eras, and matching the wrong cylinder to your keyway will either reject the key entirely or compromise the entire hierarchy.

The Medeco Biaxial series, common in Atlanta commercial buildings from the 1990s through mid-2000s, uses angled cuts and sidebar coding. Look for “Biaxial” stamped on the cylinder face and a key with dual-axis milling. These systems require factory-original cylinders for master key compatibility; aftermarket Biaxial equivalents rarely hold the tolerances needed for clean master-key operation.

The Medeco 32 series (also marked M3) replaced Biaxial in most new installations after 2005. It adds a slider mechanism to the sidebar, and the key has a distinct dimple pattern alongside the traditional angled cuts. The Medeco X4 is the current residential and light commercial line. It is not backward-compatible with Biaxial or 32 series keyways; attempting to force a X4 cylinder into an older master system will destroy the keyway. For aftermarket versus OEM: on Medeco master key systems, we use factory-original cylinders exclusively. The pin tolerances in master-keyed stacks are tight enough that variance in aftermarket pinning has caused us to return and rebuild jobs. The savings are not worth the callback.

Signs Your Medeco Master Key System Is Failing

• Key operates some locks in the hierarchy but not others. This usually indicates a worn master pin in one cylinder that has sheared or settled out of spec. The change key still works because it doesn’t lift that pin; the master key fails because it requires that pin to sit at the shear line. We find this most often in systems that haven’t been serviced since installation.
• Key requires jiggling or repeated insertion to turn. Medeco’s sidebar mechanism depends on precise angular alignment of the key cuts. Wear in the sidebar channel, or buildup of oxidized brass from Atlanta’s humid summers, creates drag that feels like a key problem but is often cylinder degradation. We photograph the sidebar wear and show the customer before replacing.
• Grand master key works, but sub-master keys have stopped operating their assigned locks. This points to a master pin stack that has been re-pinned incorrectly during a previous service, or a cylinder that was replaced without proper decoding. The hierarchy is mathematical; one wrong pin depth breaks the logic chain for that entire key level.
• Key turns but bolt doesn’t retract fully. In master-keyed mortise cylinders, the cam tailpiece can wear asymmetrically from the additional torque of multiple key profiles. We’ve replaced cam assemblies on Medeco mortise installations in Midtown office suites where the door hardware outlasted the cylinder interface.
• New keys cut from code don’t operate the lock. If original keys work but fresh cuts don’t, the master key system may have been originally pinned to a non-standard code, or the code card was lost and subsequent keying was done by impression. We decode the existing bitting and rebuild the documentation.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no dangerous tension or electrical hazard in swapping a Medeco cylinder; the risk is architectural. Removing a cylinder without recording the existing bitting can destroy the only evidence of how your master system is pinned. We have rebuilt systems from scratch after owners removed cylinders for “just a quick look” and mixed up the order of reinstallation.

What you can safely check: verify the series marking on the cylinder face (Biaxial, 32/M3, or X4), count how many keys operate the lock, and note which keys stopped working when. Photograph the cylinder from the face and side before touching anything.

What goes wrong with DIY: buying a “Medeco-compatible” cylinder that isn’t master-key capable, rekeying a change key cylinder into a master system (which will accept the change key but reject all master levels), or losing the sidebar spring during disassembly. The sidebar spring is small, under tension, and easily launched into a door cavity.
