Identification is straightforward: the model number is stamped on the edge of the door, on the latch faceplate, or inside the thumb turn housing. Schlage uses a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset - the distance from the door edge to the center of the cylinder. Most Atlanta homes built after 2000 use 2-3/8 inch; pre-1990s stock often needs 2-3/4 inch. We carry both backsets and the conversion latches.

We install OEM Schlage and select aftermarket equivalents that meet the same ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 or Grade 1 specification. Signs Your Schlage Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• Key requires jiggling or repeated attempts. The pin chambers inside the cylinder have worn unevenly, or the driver pins have flattened from use. In Atlanta’s climate, humidity also causes minor corrosion that accelerates this wear. We replace the cylinder or the complete deadbolt depending on the grade of the existing hardware.
• Thumb turn rotates but bolt does not extend. The tailpiece connecting thumb turn to bolt mechanism has sheared or the bolt housing has cracked. This is common on Grade 3 builder-grade deadbolts after 5-8 years of use. We find this frequently in Decatur and East Atlanta homes with original hardware.
• Bolt sticks or grinds in the strike plate. Door frame settlement, common in Atlanta’s clay-heavy soils, shifts the strike plate out of alignment. The bolt face wears down from repeated friction. We realign the strike and replace the bolt if the face is scored.
• Loose cylinder spins in the door. The mounting screws have stripped the door material, or the cylinder collar has cracked. This creates a security gap - the cylinder can be pulled or manipulated. We install a reinforced collar and longer screws into the door structure.
• Key breaks off in the cylinder. Usually indicates a seized pin or a key that was already stressed. Extracting the broken key without damaging the cylinder requires the right extractor tools. We carry these and can rekey on site if the cylinder is salvageable.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check: verify the model number on the faceplate, confirm your backset measurement with a tape measure, and test whether the issue is the lock or the door alignment by operating the bolt with the door open. If the bolt throws smoothly without the door closed, your strike plate is the problem, not the deadbolt.

Where DIY goes wrong: drilling a new bore without a door jig creates visible splintering, especially on fiberglass or steel doors common in newer Atlanta subdivisions. Improper cylinder orientation - Schlage cylinders are handed left or right - results in a thumb turn that rotates backward. And rekeying requires pinning kits most homeowners don’t own.
