Which Schlage Models This Applies To
Schlage has produced three distinct cylinder architectures that determine how a rekey is performed. DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely remove a Schlage cylinder for inspection: unscrew the interior thumbturn or lever rose, slide the cylinder out with the key inserted at the 10 o’clock position, and note the model stamp. What happens next is where DIY goes wrong. Rekeying requires a pinning kit with specific depths (0-9 at .0125-inch increments), a plug follower to prevent top-pin and spring loss, and a key gauge to verify cut depths. The springs are under compression; without a follower, they launch into the housing and the cylinder is ruined.
