Signs Your Schlage Smart Lock Installation Is Failing
- The motor runs but the bolt doesn’t move. The cam linkage between the motor gearbox and the deadbolt tailpiece has stripped or cracked. This is the most common failure we see on Connect series locks in Atlanta after four to six years of use, especially on doors that stick seasonally.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check three things yourself: battery type (alkaline only, never lithium or rechargeable, which voltage-spike the board), strike plate alignment, and whether the deadbolt moves freely with the interior thumbturn removed. If the bolt drags, file the strike plate, not the lock.
Where DIY goes wrong: Schlage smart locks require precise tailpiece orientation - a quarter-turn off and the motor will bind or strip the cam. The door position sensor must be calibrated during installation, which requires the Schlage app in technician mode. We’ve replaced locks that were ruined by over-torqued mounting screws or backward battery insertion. The electrical components are low-voltage but the motor gearbox is not user-serviceable; opening the housing voids the warranty and usually damages the weather sealing.
